Regarding being confronted by a squall while single handing, why not use a lightning detector. You point out that wind speeds seem to be proportional to lightning. In the middle of the ocean, I would imagine that false alarms are relatively uncommon. Although, I would defer to the more learned for real-life experience with such devices.
